I. Find out what type or how much maintenance is required to keep toilets in good working
condition.

2. Ask what repair parts are necessary for the most common type of repair job. Are these
parts available "off shelf" or will they have to be special ordered. This applies to ball
cocks as well as flush valve mechanisms.

FLUSHOMETER-TYPE TOILETS AND URINALS
Flushometer-type toilets and urinals operate directly from system pressure through a valve
operated automatically by water flow. Flushometer-type toilets and urinals are more frequently
found in commercial and business establishments.

TOILET REPLACEMENT: THE ULV
As with tank-type toilets, flushometer-type toilets and urinals can also be replace with UL V
models. At this time, however, very few manufacturers are producing ULV flushometer-type
toilets or urinals. In order to satisfy the existing replacement and new construction market,
manufacturers are pressed to accelerate production timetables. A manufacturers list appears at
the back of this guide.

SPECIAL CONSlDERA TlONS
Remember to consider the following points before making a selection to replace an existing
flushometer-type toilet or urinal with a UL V model.

I. Does the new toilet or urinal have the same floor flange to finish wall dimensions as the
existing toilet or urinal? Note that "rough-in" dimensions are only applicable to floor
mount toilets.

2. For wall mounted water closets, are the bolt dimensions of the new toilet compatible with
the existing wall hanger assembly?

3. Will the existing water supply configuration be compatible with the new toilet?
Generally, the new installation will require that the existing flush valve be replaced in
order to operate with a 1.6 gallon flush.

4. Has the existing system previously experienced any problems with reoccurring sewage
stoppages or drain line blockage? A Preventative maintenance program may need to be
established. As noted with tank-type UL V replacements, sewer back-ups are often blamed
on the ULV when the problem may have been preexisting.

5. Will the new toilet foot print or wall print cover the existing foot or wall print? Note the
location of the existing wall or floor finish and whether the finish will need to be
adj usted after installation.

6. Is vandalism a concern or has it ever been a problem? If so, installation of a ULV will
not change the situation. Replacement should be evaluated on a case by case basis.
