~

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PLUMBING AND MECHANICAL
OFFICIALS, I.A.P.M.O. - This entity is responsible for collecting all standards and test
criteria and producing an official construction code called the "Uniform Plumbing Code or
UPC. " IAPMO is comprised of plumbing inspectors, master and journeymen plumbers, sanitary
and mechanical engineers, public utility companies, and western plumbing industries.

The UPC is typically adopted by governmental agencies through ordinance or other legal
methods and is used as required conformance criteria for design, installation and maintenance
of plumbing systems. This document or "Code" refers to the applicable ANSI standard or other
applicable standard for particular system components. For example, vitreous china plumbing
fixtures, ANSI standard #AI12.l9.2M-1982, means that items approved must conform to
accepted ANSI standards as referenced.

The Uniform Plumbing Code is reviewed and updated every three years to keep up with
accepted changes in the plumbing industry. A complete listing ofIAPMO approved agencies that
contribute to the code are attached along with the IAPMO Table" A" list of referenced standards
or specifications as it relates to applicable plumbing components.

Special Note:
The currently accepted standards for the 3.5 gallon per flush (gpt) toilets have been applied to
the newer 1.6 gpf toilets. However, because contributing groups have determined that the
standards developed for testing 3.5 gpftoilets are not discriminating enough to be applied to 1.6
gpf toilets, new standards are currently being developed. Until new or revised standards are
adopted, the 3,5 gpf standards will be used to determine product conformance for 1.6 gpf toilets.
