~..~" ...

Page two
. November 26, 1991

.

.

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES
CDOC
* water conservation devices required in Capitol Construction projects;
* two correctional facilities irrigate with lagoon discharge water;
* irrigation at facilities on the East Canon City Complex are converting from potable to
non-potable sources;
* gray water systems application is researched and encouraged;
* agricultural applications constantly being improved.

CDOI

* lawn irrigation systems at Ft. Logan and Wheat Ridge have been partially automated
with controllers;
* Pueblo Center has installed moisture sensors to override time clocks;
* installation of moisture sensors are being investigated for other facilities;

CDOT
* water conservation policy pertaining to landscaping (Policy Directive No. 503) in place
since 1977;
* Policy Directive No. 503 currently being revised to included mandated Xeriscape
fundamentals;
* any local water conservation directive are closely followed;
* projects routinely incorporate flow meters for leak detection, moisture shut-off sensors,
non-potable water, efficient irrigation equipment and water efficient planting;
* numerous projects and facilities statewide have been constructed or are being
designed with water efficient irrigation and landscape plans;
* two rest areas have installed Clivas Multrum self-composting toilets, low-flow
toilets or auto shut-off sinks and fountains;
* recycled wastewater is used to irrigate the Deer Trail rest area;
Note:
CDOT has taken the initiative to develop a Task Force to develop specifications and
begin developing a water conservation plan.

Although not specifically part of Cole's request, I want to point out that water conservation
measures have also been implemented at the Governor's Mansion. Measures that have been
accomplished include:
* the lawn watering schedule for the mansion was reduced from every other day to
three days a week in 1988;
* the lawn watering schedule was further reduced to follow an every third day
schedule and the ET rate in 1989;
