, ,

)

6.

conservation opportunities. Potential water savings and
resulting cost savings may be realized in domestic and
kitchen uses.

The following utility costs were used to compute the
potential savings of water-conservation measures.

Water cost of $0.60 per 1,000 gallons.

Wastewater costs of $1.66 per 1,000 gallons of water
used.

Electrical energy costs of $0.0609 per kilowatt-hour.

Natural gas energy cost of $0.340l per hundred cubic
feet.

-------OOmestic Use - The largest water usage 1den~1f1ed at the
facilities was domestic use, amounting to approximately 55%
of the total water use. Two water-conservation measures
could be implemented to reduce the domestic water consumption
) at the facilities, installation of flow restrictors on flush
valve toilets and 1.0 gpm faucet aerators on all sink
faucets. Some of these water saving efforts, such as the
installation of the flow restrictors for flush valve toilets,
have already begun. The following summary identifies the
potential water and sewer savings as well as estimated
investment costs for these modifications.

The installation of flowrestrictors on the flush-
valve toilets will reduce the average water
consumption per flush by 1 gallon. This would result
in an annual water savings of approximately 364.000
gallons, or an annual cost savings for water and
sewer of $820. One time cost of these flow
restrictors is estimated at $990.

The installation of 1.0 gpm faucet aerators will also
result is water and sewer savings, along with energy
savings for heating the water. This would amount to
a water savings of about 338,000 gallons per year.
The water and sewer savings alone would amount to
about $860 per year, more than Off-setting the one
time cost of about $375 for these aerators. Energy
savings would be an added bonus.

Kitchen Uses - The kitchen area, although amounting to a very
small portion to total water use at these facilities, was the
only area where water leaks were noticed during the site
visits. The operation and maintenance of the kitchen is not
normally considered part of the duties of the building
