4 .

Capitol Complex's central mechanical and electrical systems.
An estimated 12 people work in this facility on a full time
basis.

Water use at this facility falls into two categories,
domestic and cooling. Additionally, a separate meter
supplies a back-up boiler which is used during very cold
periods durin9 the winter. Public Service company of
Colorado is b~lled for this water use.

WATER BALANCE
The types of water use identified at these three facilities
include domestic, facility cooling, kitchen, and landscape
irrigation. Estimates of water consumption in each of these
areas are discussed in the following paragraphs.

Domestic Use - Employees use potable water for drinking and
domestic purposes at these facilities. Restrooms located
throughout these buildings are equipped with 65 sinks, 66
flush valve toilets and 4 showers. Shower use at these
facilities is minimal. Daily water usage per full time
employee is estimated to be 11 gallons per day, based on the
following assumptions.

Two toilet uses at an estimated 4 gallons per use
equals 8 gpd.

One minute of sink use at an average flow rate of
3.0 gallon per minute equals 3 gpd.

Total use per employee equals 11 gpd.

with 622 full time employees, working 5 days a week, 50 weeks
per year, regular employee domestic use is estimated at
-I; 71.U-,-SOO ga:llons - pel:' -year.- - -Part- time -emp-Ioye-es-.- curd
visitors are assumed to use an additional 400,000 per year.
Total domestic use is estimated at 2,llO,500 gallons
annually.

Facilitv Coolinq - The state Power Plant has one of two
cooling towers that provides cooling to all of the State
Capitol Complex. Information about cooling tower operation
was supplied by Lou Drieling. The capacity of the tower is
650 tons. A meter has recently been installed on the feed
water to the cooling tower, but this will be the first year
for monitoring that usage. This report will estimate water
use for the cooling tower. This can be compared to actual
metered results when they are available. The cooling tower
is estimated to operate for l30 days per year, for II hours
