Profile of Existing Water System

2.1.3 Existing Water Facilities

Erie's existing water supply consists of ditch, reservoir, Colorado Big-Thompson
(CBT)2, and Windy Gap3 surface water supplies. Figure 2-1 shows the location of the
ditches, reservoirs, potable water treatment facility, and wastewater treatment plants.
Raw CBT and Windy Gap water are delivered to Erie from the Northern Colorado
Water Conservancy District (NCWCD) via a pipeline to the potable water treatment
facility in the southwest portion of the service area. Erie's storage reservoirs (Erie,
Prince, and Thomas Reservoirs) are also in the southwest portion of the service area.
Raw water pipelines convey this water to the potable water treatment facility and
to/from Thomas Reservoir. Potable water is distributed from the water treatment
facility to customers.

The Southern Water Reclamation Facility (SWRF) near Old Town currently treats all
of Erie's wastewater. This facility has a capacity of 1.2 million gallons per day (mgd)
and is being optimized to 1.6 mgd. Treated effluent is discharged into Coal Creek. A
new Northern Water Reclamation Facility (NWRF), planned for 2009, will supplement
the SWRF's treatment capacity.

Table 2-2 provides a summary of Erie's water supplies, facilities, and planning efforts.

2 CBT water is water provided to Erie through the CBT system. This system diverts water
west of the Continental Divide near Grand Lake to over 30 cities and towns and for
irrigation of 693,000 acres on the Front Range.
3 Windy Gap water is water delivered to the Front Range through the Windy Gap project and
the CBT system. Water is pumped from Windy Gap reservoir Gust west of Granby) to Lake
Granby where it is conveyed through the CBT system to Front Range water providers.
