Castle Rock Water Conservation Master Plan Backaround

Identifying where, when, and how water is used is critical to determining which
conservation measures will yield the most
reliable water savings for Castle Rock.
Water use consists of water consumed
for both indoor and outdoor purposes,
and therefore varies by region, climate
(including precipitation and rainfall), as
well as being impacted by socioeconomic
factors and other user characteristics.
Other applicable information that should
be considered when evaluating water
system demand characteristics related to
the condition and management of the
water delivery system itself.

Water Use Profile

"Identifying where, when,
and how water is used is
critical to determining
which conservation
measures will yield the
most reliable water savings
for Castle Rock."

By analyzing the current and historical water-use characteristics of each
customer category (single-family residential, multi-family, commercial, greenbelt,
irrigation, school and town), number of customers, indoor use versus outdoor
use, along with total, average and peak demand, an accurate water profile was
created. Having a thorough understanding of the amount and type of water use
taking place within each customer category today and in the future is vital to
development of programs that increase the efficiency of water use.

Use can also vary within each customer category. For example commercial
water use will vary with the type of business, whether retail sales, or restaurants,
hotels and Laundromats or car washes and breweries. Knowing whether there
may be more industrial users who and mayor may not use water for processing
is also important. For residential customers, use can vary not only by water use
habits, whether efficient or not, as well as by property size, type of landscape and
number of people in the household.

Water use is also influenced by
precipitation and temperature.
Castle Rock has a semi-arid
climate, averaging approximately
thirteen (13) inches of
precipitation per year. In the
summer, during hot or dry
weather, water use increases
approximately three hundred
percent hat of winter use,
creating an increase in demand on the water system, commonly known as peak
demand.

"Water use is influenced by
precipitation and
temperature... .
Castle Rock averages
approximately 13 inches of
precipitation per year."

TM-1 Background December 2006

16
