5.

per day. Assuming 2.5 gpm of water used per 100 tons of
capacity in a cooling tower, the annual water use is
estimated at 1,394,000 gallons. This value includes water
lost through evaporation, drift, and normal blowdown
operations. The newly installed sub meter for cooling tower
usage can be used to verify these calculation. Additionally,
reducing the wastewater costs for cooling water should result
in considerable financial savings.

Kitchen - Kitchen use is limited in these facilities. Based
on 0.3 gallons of water per meal for preparation, 27,000 of
water is used for preparation. Twelve dishwashers uses of 15
gallons each, five days a week for a year equals 47,000
gallons. During the site visit, the kitchen sink was found
to be leaking a steady flow. This leak was estimated to
amount to about 5000 gallons per year. Other miscellaneous
uses in the kitchen, ice making, cleaning, etc are estimated
at 5,000 gallons annually. Total yearly kitchen use is
therefore estimated at 84,000 gallons.

Landscape Irriqation - The landscaped area adjacent to these
buildings is minimal, estimated at 9,000 to 10,000 square
feet. Watering of these areas is done early in the morning,
and is normally done by 8:00 a.m. The sprinkler systems are
operated by automatic controllers located at the different
buildings. An estimated 50,000 gallons per year are applied
to these areas.

Unaccounted Use - The remaining water use, approximately
195,000 gallons per year, was not accounted for in this
report. This represents about 5% of total water consumed at
these facilities.

TABLE 3
Water Balance

Domest~c Use
Facility Cooling
Kitchen
Landscape Irrigation
Unaccounted Use
TOTAL

2,110,500 gal
1,395,000 gal
84,000 gal
50,000 gal
195,000 gal

55%
36%
2%
1%
5%
99%

WATER CONSERVATION OPPORTUNITIES
Observations made during the site visits, as well as
information obtained from discussions with personnel familiar
with the facility, aided in the identification of water
