reCipients. The BECC received an additional 7 surveys that were completed by brochure
recipients after the students' were finished with their portion of the project.

.

The following infonnation is based on the responses from thel5 households out of the 50 high
water users that were sent the water conservation brochure. This is the breakdown of households
when CU students tried to contact them for survey infonnation:

IS responded to the survey
13 refused
3 children answered
II answering machines
7 no phone numbers were available
I no answer
50 Total

Following the attempts to survey recipients face-to-face, the BECC attempted to contact them by
phone. By the end of the semester, CU students had information for 25 households. Denise
Delgado from CU, who is also a BECC intern, got information on the remaining 25 households,
but was not successful in actually surveying anyone. She said that people were never home and
if they were, they were busy with holiday preparations and didn't want to take the time to answer
the survey. She said phone surveys were as difficult as face~to-face surveys in actually
succeeding in finding someone home.

.

The following infonnation is based on a response of 15 households:

Nine remember receiving the brochure.
Six did not remember receiving it.
One interviewee said that her father may have received it and another stated that her husband
probably didn't show it to her. It is plausible that others in the "no" category were not the direct
recipients and that knowledge of the brochure reaching a household may not have been passed to
all other household members.

Of the 9 who received it, 8 read it and I skimmed through it.
Of the 8 who read it,S found the infonnation useful while 3 did not.

Reasons for each respective group are sited below:
Useful information in the brochure:
. talked about preserving water and ways to reduce usage
. infonnative, no commitment
. showed percentage of water usage

Not Useful:
. can't remember infonnation in brochure
. not very-effective. Needs to be coordinated with community appearance. The city doesn't
have landscape that is water-efficient, no rock gardens, no xeriscape.
. nothing he didn't already know, more helpful for "average" homeowner

.

7
