In addition, The Water Department will consider funding a Xeriscape
reference section in the Canon City Library for the public to
utilize in making wise decisions in plant choices, etc. for their
own low water use landscaping.

3. Water-efficient industrial and commercial water-using processes

Discussions with several larger industrial and commercial customers
has revealed that these customers acknowledge that water
conservation is a valid concern. Some water conservation measures
have already been implemented and many others are being considered.
It is suggested that an annual follow-up be conducted with each of
these customers to review what water consumption has been for the
past year, what has been done to conserve water and what might be
implemented in the next year to effect additional savings of water.

Unfortunately, due to the low water rates in the past, there has
not been sufficient incentive to zealously pursue water
conservation measures by these consumers. Perhaps with the
implementation of a rate structure that will promote water
conservation there will be sufficient incentive to investigate low
use processes. Additionally for two of these customers, there
exists a special rate by agreement that can not be adjusted until
2010.

4. Water Reuse Systems - Potable and Non-potable

Potable reuse systems are very expensive and usually do not become
an important part of planning until supply and demand are nearly
equal. This is not the case in Canon City.

The only non-potable reuse we are aware of exists at the wastewater
treatment plant where irrigation of the grounds is accomplished by
the use of treated effluent. In this case the benefit is to the
City of Florence water system and not the City of Canon City Water
Department.

The majority of the original water service area is serviced by a
. __ _ __IllJJnbSlr _DL-.i:n:igati nn_ditch-_compani-@S,_uAl~{;.fle--diH:ft--waeer--
causes a tremendous burden on the Street Department, it actually
lessens the burden on the Water Department. This reduces the
peaking problem that many water systems experience during the
summer months due to irrigation.

Recent growth and the majority of all future expansion will be in
areas that ditch water is not available. Therefore, additional
irrigation demands will be imposed upon the potable water system in
the future; which makes the xeriscape landscape program important
in Canon City.

6
