Public comment period started
Friday and runs through Nov. 4.
Written comments should be sem
to Paul S. Fisher, PWD, P.O. Box
1460, Canon City 81215.1460.
Council wilJ then consider the plan
for approval.
While Canon City bas good
water supplies right now, continued
growth will put demands on the sup-

Continued (['()m page 1
help with peak use times and
enlarge city water mains, he said.
The city also has encouraged
installation of water conservation
plumbing for new homes and
remodeling of older homes. There
also is a program to help home-
owners.
The city also provides assis-
tance in finding water leaks in toi-
lets and sprinkler systems.
One suggestion is a water rate
restructuring to encourage waler
conservation, Fisher said. The pre-
sent water rates charge for the first
I,Goo gallons then a reduced rale
for additional gallons,
A water rate structure that
charges a lower rate for the first
1,000 gallons and then progres-.
sively higher rates for additional
gallons will encourage conserva-
tion. It also will help those who
live in apartments and homes with-
out yards. he said.

plies, he said. The city is in th~
process of upgrading the existing
water plant to meet future needs.
However, projected growth rates
will_ force the city to expand the
water treatment plant in the year
2030, and before 2050, the city will
have to buy additional water rights;
he said. The community should loo~
at water conservation education and
efforts before those dates.
The city will have a xerisca~
(low water use) garden at the new
police station in the Profession~
Complex as a model show place:
New home 'owners will be encour~.
'aged to use.xenscape gardening fOr
front and bank yards. . .;
. The city's high water use periO<!
in the summers has been offset by
the bomes that. use irrigation wateJ
for grass, bush- and tree watering;
Fisher said. However, newer hom~
are not using iirigation, so futuf~
summer time demand will be higher;
The city plans -to build an addi;:
tional water storage tank to . .: i
Please see WATER, page 12 ?.:

The city also will embark on a
consumer education program to
help people to understand the need
for water conservation. Providing
this information to high school stu-
dents will have a high .priority, he
said.
