The water conservation plan must then be adopted and made publicly
available. We must then begin to implement the plan. Future
changes can be adopted at anytime. However, if changes are major,
we must give public notice, make changes available in draft form,
and provide the public opportunity to comment on changes before
they can be adopted.

SECTION 2. INVENTORY

2.1 Water Supply Sources/Storage

The City of Canon City's water supply source is 100 percent surface
water coming from various water rights of the Arkansas River.
There is 26.18 cfs available at the Low Head Dam on the River and
11.5 cfs available from the Canon City Hydraulic and Irrigation
Ditch Company ditch; both being located at the western end of town
near the water treatment plant.

Standard Operating Procedure is to pump water from the Low Head Dam
to a large settling pond called Pond "AU which has a capacity of
approximately 46 Million Gallons. This allows time for settling of
suspended solids before the treatment process, and up to 4 days of
raw water for protection against pollution in the Arkansas River
during periods of peak demand. For stand-by and emergency
purposes, water may be taken directly from the Hydraulic Ditch to
the Treatment Plant without the benefit of the settling time.

Availability of all treatable city water rights are as follows:

Source

cfs

Maximum gallons
per 24 hour period

Maximum gallons
per year

At Low Head Dam:

Hydraulic Ditch 19.0 12,280,023
Old Canon Water Works 2.5 1,615,793
-- ~-------~----------
--- - ------~------ -----
F.
