.

.

3

Although a public education program will address the need for water
conservation generally. the need to instill water conservation in our
childrens beliefs is imperative. Additionally. the whole country is aware
of the need for change in our public school system. The use of water
conservation as an integrating topic in the middle school curriculum will
meet several important needs of our community: develop a water conservation
ethic in our next generation of adults; assist in bringing water
conservation to the attention of their parents; help in presenting
innovative and exciting topics to our middle school students thereby
creating a better learning environment for the students and the teachers.
Lewis Palmer School District 38 is considered to be one of the top school
districts in Colorado as judged by standardized test schools and the
success of graduates. Only by the constant improvement of our curriculum
and the ways we teach our students will this success continue.

IMPlEMENTAllON:
Both parts of the proposed program will initiate with the design and
development of materials. presentations. facility visits. and curriculum.
Both parts will use portions from the other.
The public educational program will focus on outside water
conservation first and later on inside and commercial water savings. As the
presentations. facility visits. and workshops are developed they will be
made available to local community groups. The brochures and conservation
items will be made accessible to the community.
The water conservation curriculum will be merged into the current
curriculum rather than as a separate block. This will be done so the idea
of water conservation will continue to be brought to the attention of the
students throughout their middle school experience. The study of water. its
conservation and uses will relate to many areas already in the curriculum
such as life science. chemistry. atomic structure, electricity, physical
sceince. and earth science (Appendix).
Although the water conservation studies will be integrated the
program will use a series of forty minute classes which will include
completed lesson plans. The studies will be based on an investigation of
the local watershed. the aspects of water pollution and waste and their
management and mitigation.
The first use of the curriculum will occur during the 1993/1994
school year. During the second year a newly constructed middle school will
be occupied On the school ground is a flowing stream and a one acre pond.
Both water bodies will be used extensively in the curriculum. Further
development and modification of the curriculum will be completed the next
year and as necessary during the following years. Also. it is hoped that
the long-range goal of expanding water conservation curriculum to other
grade levels will be achieved.

PARllaPANTS:
The individuals who will be primary responsible for the program are:
Phil Steininger (WWSD Manager); Paul Grogger (WWSD Water Board member
and Professor of Geology at the University of Colorado at Colorado
Springs); James Connally (Middle School Science Head), and Samuel Morgan
(Middle School Science Teacher)
