~

TASK 3: WATER CONSERVATION EDUCATION

PURPOSE
The third component of the water conservation project is to
educate residents on the importance and methods they can use to
reduce water usage in their homes and outside. Emphasis has been
placed on written information, public forums, and education of
elementary students. A questionnaire on water habits will also
be distributed before and after the overall project to try to
evaluate project effectiveness.

STATUS
Water conservation educational activities are in progress. To
date, three newsletters have been distributed to every address in
Town. The first newsletter included a survey (see enclosed).
At the 1992 Gilcrest Daze summer festival, the Town had a water
conservation display table that included literature, water
metering equipment, a low flow toilet display, and samples of
bluegrass and tall fescue sod. Visitors to the table were also
shown how to measure the amount of water their sprinklers apply
and to determine how much irrigation is needed to maintain their
lawns. During Earth Day Week in April, the Town coordinated with
Gilcrest Elementary School to provide educational literature,
posters, and two movies on water conservation for grades 1 - 5.
In addition, the Town led the students on field trips to show
them the wastewater and water treatment facilities.

The balance of educational activities includes a water
conservation forum for residents, additional newsletters, and
distribution of the water use survey at project end. The public
forum, planned for summer 1993, will focus exclusively on outside
water conservation since irrigation activities use the most
water.

Final reports will be prepared on all three tasks and submitted
to the Office of WAter Conservation during the spring of 1994.
