CDNI

Section 2
Profile of Existing Water System

This section provides information on the physical characteristics of Erie's existing
water supply system, identifies water sources and system limitations, reviews current
policies and planning initiatives, and summarizes current water conservation
activities.

2.1 Physical Characteristics of the Existing Water Supply
System
2.1.1 Erie Service Area

Erie is located north of Denver in Weld and Boulder counties. Erie currently provides
water and wastewater services to over 5,000 homes in addition to commercial users
and other municipal needs. Erie's planned service area consists of 46 square miles
bordered to the east by Interstate 25 and on the west by U.S. Highway 287. The
service area extends north of Highway 52, with State Highway 7 serving as its
southern boundary. Approximately two-thirds of this area is expected to be
developed for residential and commercial uses, with the remainder of the planning
area consisting of parks, agriculture, and other open space.

Erie completed an update of its Comprehensive Master Plan (Comprehensive Plan) in
December 2005. This Comprehensive Plan provides goals, guiding principles, and
policies concerning future development. The land use map provided in Figure 2-1
identifies anticipated land use throughout the service area at buildout. The majority of
development is expected to occur in the eastern portion of the service area, while the
northwestern area will predominantly consist of designated open space and
agricultural uses.

2.1.2 Population

Over the past 5 years, Erie's population has doubled and is expected to continue to
rapidly develop in the coming years. As shown in Table 2-1, Erie has a current
population of approximately 15,000. This population is projected to continue to
increase rapidly as Erie develops. It is anticipated that Erie will serve over
33,500 people in 20251. Additional growth beyond 2025 is likely.

1 This estimate is based on projections provided in Erie's 2007 Water and Wastewater Master
Plan which provides the most up-to-date population projections. Population projections
presented in the 2005 Comprehensive Plan differ.

DRAFT

2-1

\\DENSVR1\PROJECTS\9228 - ERIE\59443 - CONSERVATION PLAN\REPORT\FINAL DRAFT\SECTION 2.DOC
