Castle Rock Water Conservation Master Plan Backaround

transmission pipeline installation, conjunctive use plans with other water
providers, increasing existing reservoir storage capacities and
participation in new storage projects.

Another source of renewable water is alluvial well water. Alluvial water
makes up the balance of the Town's current water portfolio. Historically,
the Town has had difficulty in operating some of the alluvial facilities, due
to high iron content and bio fouling.

Reuse
Groundwater used by the Town that is collected and conveyed to the Plum
Creek Wastewater treatment plant for treatment and discharge to Plum
Creek can, by law, be reclaimed and reused by the Town. Similarly, a
portion of the groundwater used for lawn, park, and golf course irrigation
that returns to Plum Creek can also be reclaimed and reused by following
the proper procedures. The Town plans to maximize the use/reuse of this
water through direct and indirect reuse.

Direct reuse may include
water that is taken directly
from Plum Creek Wastewater
Authority and brought back
through a separate system to
be used for irrigation of golf
courses, parks, streetscapes,
open spaces, and certain
industrial uses. Existing golf
courses are targeted to
change over from raw water
use for irrigation to reclaimed water. New golf courses should not be
considered as open space in the planning process, and should be planned
to use reclaimed water for irrigation.

lIThe Town plans to maximize
the use/reuse of reclaimed
water through direct and
indirect reuse.. . reclaimed
water ...planned for use on
streetscapes... golf
courses...industrial uses..."

Indirect reused includes treated wastewater effluent that is discharged
directly to Plum Creek and then pumping it back out further downstream
after it undergoes some natural treatment processes. The reclaimed
water would be delivered back to the Town for further treatment to drinking
water quality and distributed into the water system.

For further information regarding the use of reclaimed water, see the
Water Resource Strategic Master Plan, and the Town of Castle Rock
Wastewater and Reclaimed Water Master Plan (December 2003), which is
scheduled for update in 2006 and 2007.

TM-1 Background December 2006

7
