Submitted to: State Office of Water Conservation
Submitted by: Jean Loose and Charles Johnson

4. Some of the older type faucets with washers tend to leak but
would be replaced with automatic faucets.

5. The calculations done by the Energy Office used the figure
105 degrees water temperature delivery. Our water is heated to
140 degrees, then cooled to 105 degrees. Therefore, we would
have higher savings in energy cost.

We propose the savings could be as much as $22,258.80
per year by using infrared automatic faucets. The payback period
would then be as short as 2.13 years.

QUESTION 2 Methods to monitor the change in water use.

MONITORING OF THE PROJECT:

Since many of the calculations have already been done and
accurate measurements with the infrared automatic faucets are
known, the best way to track the savings is to monitor the
monthly water bill. A water bill printout that includes individual
group homes and on campus use will be utiized in preparing a
table or graph for twelve months before infrared faucets and after
they have been installed.

QUESTION 3 Idea for project and resources

As an RN for 23 years and an instructor at GJRC for
almost 11 years, I have taught hand washing procedures to
hundreds of individuals. Many of them are concerned about the
amount of water used for hand washing. To do the procedure
correctly without recontaminating hands, much water is wasted.
During a visit to Disneyland, while using their infrared automatic
faucets, it was apparent that the GJRC could benefit from the use
of these faucets. For the study, hand washing was the most
consistent and measurable use of water and the study involves
just that aspect of water use. The additional uses of the lavatories
are numerous and there would be more savings than indicated,
the estimated savings in water use would be at least three times
what we could save in hand washing alone.

Page 6
