W
-10-
loading condition, the minimum factor of safety was
found to be 1.08. The circular arc representing this
condition is also shown on Plate 3.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the results of our field explorations,
laboratory testing, and engineering analyses, we believe
that the tailings embankment is stable and will remain
stable throughout its life. The factor of safety ob-
tained for the static condition indicates that the em-
bankment has been adequately designed to resist slope
or foundation failures for normal conditions.
The factor of safety obtained for the simu-
lated earthquake or pseudostatic loading conditions
falls in the range of marginal stability. In other
words, for an earthquake which inducas a ground accel-
eration of 10 percent gravity, the embankment would be
marginally stable and significant deformaticn could
occur. However, the earthquake load used ir. our analy-
ses is approximately twice that which could be expected
to occur at the site. Therefore, it is our opinion that
tiie embankment will perfrom satisfactorily for typical
seismic. events in the vicinity of Creede, Colorado.
CIA ML`i 1, MV,J •,L
