F.ARTiISUAF.E CONSIDERATIONS
Creede is located in an area designated as
Zone 1 on the seismic risk map prepared by the ESSA/
Coast and Geodetic Survey, issued in January 1969. Gen-
erally, earthquakes in Zone 1 areas are relatively small
in magnitude and infrequent. A literature search indi-
cated that no major earthquakes have been recorded within
recent history in the vicinity of Creede. However, sev-
eral small tremors have been felt in the area. The
largesL of these probably induced a ground acceleration
of Less than S percent gravity, based on reported damage.
For this study, we analyzed the stability of
tlir embankment for a static condition with no horizontal
loitding and for a pseudostatic horizontal loading condi-
tion of 10 percent gravity. Stability under this as-
rinmed loading condition should be indicative of stability
with any earthquake which is likely to occur at the site.
kE.Sltl.TS OF ANALYSES
For the static condition, our analyses indi-
'"t.e that the embankment has a minimum factor of safety
of 1.42.
