June 19,2013 C-1980-007/West Elk Mine JRS
area following reclamation. Overall, the reclamation on this road segment was excellent and completed in
accordance with the approved reclamation plan.
-The second Box Canyon road segment, between the first and second set of MDW pads (MDWs 19-07/19-08 and
19-06)was a short road segment. This road segment was well graded and stable and no erosional problems were
noted at the time of the inspection. This road segment was graded to blend with the surrounding undisturbed
areas. The reclaimed road segment had positive drainage and no low spots were observed. Slash was placed
across the road to limit access and to help break up the potential sheet flow and control erosion. There was no
sediment observed off the site. There was good first-year perennial vegetation growth, including grasses and
forbs. Topsoil was replaced on this road segment but,as with the above road segment,no topsoil depth
measurements were taken. Overall, the backfilling and grading, drainage control and complete reclamation of this
road segment was excellent and completed in accordance with the approved reclamation plan.
-The third Box Canyon road segment, between the second and third set of MDW pads(MDWs 19-06 and 20-
23/20-25)was well graded and stable and no erosional problems were noted at the time of the inspection. This
road segment was graded to blend with the surrounding undisturbed areas. The reclaimed road segment had
positive drainage and no low spots were observed. Slash was placed across the road to limit access and to help
break up the potential sheet flow and control erosion. There was no sediment observed off the site. There was
good first-year perennial vegetation growth, including grasses and forbs. No weeds were observed on this road
segment but it should be checked during the weed spraying operations to verify this. Topsoil was replaced on this
road segment but, as with the above road segments,no topsoil depth measurements were taken. Overall, the
backfilling and grading, drainage control and complete reclamation of this road segment was excellent and
completed in accordance with the approved reclamation plan.
- The fourth and final Box Canyon road segment, between the third and fourth set of MDW pads (MDWs 20-
23/20-25 and 21-25.5/21-28)was well graded and stable and no erosional problems were noted at the time of the
inspection. This road segment was graded to blend with the surrounding undisturbed areas. The reclaimed road
segment had positive drainage and no low spots were observed. This road spur was graded to blend with the surrounding
undisturbed areas. The reclaimed road spur had positive drainage and no low spots were observed. Slash was
placed across the road spur to limit access and to help control erosion. There was good first-year perennial
vegetation growth, including grasses and forbs. There was a large number of Canadian thistle observed on the
road spur. This thistle will need to be sprayed. Topsoil was replaced on this road segment but, as with the above
road segments,no topsoil depth measurements were taken. Overall, the backfilling and grading, drainage control
and complete reclamation of this road segment was excellent and completed in accordance with the approved
reclamation plan.
-The access road spur for MDWs E4-80.5/81.5/83 was well graded and stable and no erosional problems were
noted at the time of the inspection.
