10 . 2 OPEN WOODLAND AND ALPINE <br /> An "open woodland" is not portrayed as a homogeneous <br /> flora pattern over a uniform landscape. Different types of growth <br /> media and topographic sites vary in their suitability for <br /> herbaceous and woody vegetation. A reclaimed steep slope would <br /> probably have fewer successfully established trees and shrubs than <br /> a relatively level site with similar soil if initially both sites <br /> were planted with the same species and densities. It is not <br /> realistic to expect a reclaimed waste rock dump to provide a <br /> vegetative cover comparable to that of a reclaimed site on a <br /> subsoil . Taking these factors into account, an "open woodland" <br /> environment will be sought which has the following vegetational <br /> characteristics: 1) a low to moderate cover ( 25% to 70% foliage <br /> projection) of herbaceous vegetation; 2 ) a planted tree stand with <br /> an expected average density of 20 to 150 trees per, acre; and 3) a <br /> planted shrub stand with an expected average density of 20 to 75 <br /> selected shrubs per acre. <br /> The alpine is characterized by a treeless environment <br /> with dense to sparse tundra vegetation, undulating and steep <br /> landscapes , fellfields, talus slopes , cirque formations , and more . <br /> The Open Pit and the slopes of the Cirque Dump will conform to an <br /> alpine landscape with their talus-like slopes within the <br /> configuration of a naturally existing cirque formation (Tenmile <br /> Cirque) . The south slope of Ceresco Ridge will likewise conform <br /> to adjacent talus sites along the steep side slopes of the <br /> glaciated Arkansas Valley. An alpine landscape will be sought <br /> upon the level surface of the Cirque Dump and upon the upper <br /> slopes and surface of the McNulty Dump by utilizing rock protected <br /> micro-climates to establish vegetation composed of native alpine <br /> species and which project a foliage cover of 5 to 40 percent. An <br /> alternative vegetation will be composed of species from the Climax <br /> seed mixture and natural invaders . <br /> 10 . 3 SURROUNDING LAND USES <br /> Land use on surrounding lands of Climax are forestry, <br /> recreation, summer domestic grazing , watershed , industrial <br /> 10-2 <br />
