10 . RECLAMATION PLAN
10 .1 RECLAMATION GOALS
Stabilization and revegetation objectives for the Climax
Mine have been, and will continue to be, pursued with the best
practical technology developed for high-altitude reclamation.
Climax has contributed much time and expense to the tasks of
researching , testing and developing practical solutions to
reclamation problems on the Climax property, and elsewhere in
high-altitude environments .
Long-term reclamation goals have been to provide an
initial stabilization and diverse vegetational sere that would
naturally and/or managerially promote a self-sustaining
vegetational progression towards landscape stability. Climax
feels that it has met this goal of promoting and obtaining a
self-sustaining vegetation on certain sites within its property
which will lead to succeeding vegetational stages and advanced
landscape stability.
Integrating land use within developmental vegetation
stages leading to a stabilized landscape is a delicate task,
especially in high environments such as at Climax. However. , such
integration must be provided for since so many years are required
for the process. Climax ' s goal is to integrate any of three land
use types onto designated reclaimed landscapes. All affected
Climax lands within the subalpine zone will be reclaimed to an
open woodland environment ( excluding lower interior of Open Pit) ;
and , additionally, the reclaimed Arkansas aggregate area will
provide a limited type of recreational use within the open
woodland environment. All affected Climax lands within the alpine
zone will be reclaimed to an alpine landscape. Open woodland and
alpine were selected because they are compatible with surrounding
lands and to each other ' s relative topographic position within the
high glaciated mountains.
10-1
