project on Colorado Highway 91 just east of Fremont Pass
was completed during the year. This project, under the
auspices of the Colorado Department of Highways , disturbed
approximately ten acres by constructing a large truck
underpass beneath the roadbed. This underpass will allow
haul trucks to move rock from the mine site to the tailing
dams for stabilization and reclamation activities .
RECLAMATION ACTIVITIES
During the underpass construction operation, approximately
50 , 000 cubic yards of topsoil material were removed and
stockpiled at Buffehrs Lake . Following construction ,
4"-8" of topsoil was placed on the fill slopes, and the
slopes were fertilized and seeded with the standard Climax
mix. This minor revegetation activity was approved by the
Colorado Department of Highways. Success or failure of
this revegetation activity will be appraised at the end of
the 1989 growing season and reported in the 1989 Annual
Report.
Reclamation work in the Arkansas Aggregate Area (Area #4 )
was completed during 1988. The remaining ten acres were
topsoiled ( 4"-8" ) , fertilized ( standard Climax type and
rate ) , and seeded (Climax mix) . Additional rip-rap was
placed along the banks of the Arkansas River for stabil-
ity . Although the acreages reclaimed during 1987 in the
Arkansas Aggregate Area exhibited good growth after one
growing season, two to four growing seasons are needed at
the high altitudes of Climax to adequately judge reclama-
tion success.
DUST SUPPRESSION
Dust suppression activities on the unwetted portions of
the tailing ponds and dams at Climax continued during
1988 . Lower than normal snow accumulations melted early,
and Coherex applications began in May and continued
throughout the summer and early fall. Application rates
and areas of application were similar to the 1987 period.
No regulatory or citizen complaints regarding blowing dust
were received during 1988. The dust suppression program
will continue in 1989.
ANTICIPATED 1989 ACTIVITY
The following reclamation oriented activities are planned
for 1989:
1. The permit amendment will be filed formally during
the first half of the year.
-2-
