Jouflas , Chairperson
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80213 j
Re : Annual Report , Permit No. M-77-493, Climax Mine
Dear Mr. Jouflas:
As with the past several years, activity at the Climax
Mine has been limited to continuous maintenance of the
mine , mill , tailing areas , and water treatment and balance
systems. All phases and areas of the operation were main-
tained at a high state of readiness in anticipation of an
upswing in world molybdenum market conditions. Although a
minor rise in prices did occur during 1988, it was not
enough to bring the mine back on line. Climax intends to
maintain the mine in this active ready state as a swing
producer with the ability to produce product on short
notices as the market dictates. Employment at the mine
averaged 55 through most of 1988 but increased to 68 late
in the year as plans were developed for possible limited
production in 1989.
The amendment to the Climax permit to bring the permit and
reclamation plan into closer conformity with the present
and anticipated future operating scenarios at the mine was
drafted during the year following a meeting with then
Minerals Chief , Ed Bischoff. The text of this draft was
submitted in early July to Mr. Bischoff Is office for
informal review prior to formal filing. However, staff
reductions and a change of job by Mr. Bischoff left little
time for informal reviews by staff. Presently, the amend-
ment is being re-reviewed internally at Climax and will be
filed formally (with appropriate fee) during the first
half of 1989. Our target date for filing is April 15.
This amendment is discussed in more detail in the February
25, 1988 Annual Report.
AFFECTED LANDS
Affected acreages did not increase during 1988 with one
minor exception.
