Revised 11/15/81
Conservation Service estimates that approximately 1 ton per acre of hay
could be harvested annually from the irrigated pasturelands near the
Purgatoire River. The Colorado State Forest Service estimates that
approximately 60 cubic feet of wood fiber could be produced per acre per
year under intensive high levels of management.
The area on which the Maxwell Mine is located has not been previously
mined. The Maxwell Mine began operation in 1976 and has continued
operation since that time.
Existing land use, as determined by the Las Animas County Planning and
Land Use Office, is shown on the Land Use Map (Map 4) . The coal mining
operations at the Maxwell Mine are allowed by a special use permit by
the Las Animas County.
2.04.4 Cultural and Historic Resource Information
The area where the Maxwell Mine is located has historically been a
mining and ranching community. The majority of the area which CF&I
Steel Corporation plans to mine is located an the Maxwell Land Grant.
The area has primarily been settled during the middle and late 1800' s.
Little or no information currently exists on the cultural and historic
resources of the immediate area which the Maxwell Mine will affect
during the term of the mine. Primarily all historic information
associated with the region centers around the town of Trinidad,
Colorado, approximately 27 miles east of the mine. Trinidad has
historically served as the hub of the area as far as economic and
cultural activities are concerned. CF&I Steel Corporation has completed
an archaeological investigation of the area which will be disturbed
during construction of the coal processing waste banks. In addition, an
Archaeology Map (Map 5) , has been prepared to show the relative
proximity of the area surveyed with the area which will be disturbed. A
literature search has been conducted by the Colorado Historical Society
to determine if any cultural or historic resources listed on the
2.04-3
