Revised 11/15/81
National Register of Historic Places are located within the permit area
of the Maxwell Mine. Exhibit 5, Cultural and Historic Resource
Information contains the report on the archaeological investigations of
the Maxwell Mine area and the letter from the Colorado Historical
Society.
The lithic scatter shown on the Archaeology Map (Map 5) , which has been
investigated, has not been disturbed during channel construction. The
channel construction took place after permitted by the Colorado Mined
Land Reclamation Division and occurred during 1980. Because the
majority of the area which will be disturbed during the life of the
Maxwell Mine was disturbed during 1976, the remaining portion of the
disturbed area was investigated. The remaining portion of the permit
area will not be disturbed during the term of this permit. Subsidence
of the surface is not currently planned during the permit term for this
area.
2.04.5 General Description of Geology and Hydrology
A general description of the geologic and hydrologic setting has been
prepared by Water, Waste, and Land, Limited for CF&I Steel Corporation
for both the Maxwell and Allen Mines. This report which is shown in
Exhibit 6, Hydrology and Geology Information, reviews the general
hydrologic and geologic description of the area which the Maxwell Mine
will affect and the surrounding area. In addition, surface geology is
shown on the Geology Map (Map 6). Typical geologic cross sections have
been constructed and are shown on the Geologic Cross Sections (Map 7).
The regional hydrology is shown on the Hydrology Map (Map 8) .
CF&I Steel Corporation has completed a hydrology, geology, and water
quality study through Water, Waste, and Land, Limited. Baseline data
for both the Maxwell and Allen Mines are contained in this report and
have been utilized to model the expected impacts on surface and
groundwater for the two operations.
2.04-4
