Revised 11/15/81
and are currently used for rangeland on a limited basis. Productivity
of this land for grazing is quite low. The Soil Conservation Service
estimates that it takes approximately 80 acres of this land to support
an animal unit on a year round basis. In these same steep hills, a
minor amount of forestry products could be harvested as saw logs or mine
Props for local use. This land must be carefully managed to prevent
erosion of the soil . The Colorado State Forest Service estimates that
this land is capable of producing from 40 to 65 cubic feet of wood fiber
per acre per year.
Due to the limited capabilities and productivity of the land as
rangeland or forest land, the area is best suited for fish and wildlife
habitat. The fish and wildlife habitat use is that which currently
exists in the area.
Additional potential for other types of land use exist. These land uses
include residential , industrial , commercial , and recreational . CF&I
Steel Corporation does not anticipate that major or significant portions
of the area will be utilized for these land uses due to the sparse
population of the area and the remoteness from high density population
areas. In addition, lack of services required by these land uses , such
as electricity, potable water, and sewage disposal facilities in the
area, limit the number of people which could potentially move into this
area to cause the change in the land use from pastureland and wildlife
habitat to one of these other higher land uses. Within the industrial
land use, only continued mining of coal and related industries is
possible. Continuation of the mining activities in the area by CF&I
Steel Corporation and other mining companies will be dictated by the
demand for this quality of coal .
Productivity of the permit area before mining has been estimated by the
Las Animas Soil Conservation Service and the Colorado State Forest
Service. Exhibit 4, Land Use Information shows the estimated
productivity of these lands under high levels of management. The Soil
2.04-2
