Revised 11/15/81
2.04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SURFACE OR
UNDERGROUND MINING ACTIVITIES
2.04.1 Objectives
To ensure that the environmental resources which may be impacted or
affected by the Maxwell Mine operation are properly identified, CF&I
Steel Corporation has provided a complete and accurate description of
the environmental resources at and around the proposed Maxwell mining
operation.
2.04.2 Responsibilities
Substantial effort has been made by CF&I Steel Corporation to provide
all information required under this Section to illustrate and describe
the environmental resources which may be affected by the Maxwell mining
operation. Numerous state, federal , and local government agencies have
provided information for this application.
2.04.3 General Requirements: Site Description and Land Use
Information
The land use which was present prior to the development of the Maxwell
Mine consisted of pastureland. Areas adjacent to the surface facilities
and the area which will be affected by underground mining consist of
pastureland and fish and wildlife habitat. The location of these land
uses are shown on the Land Use Map (Map 4) .
The land within the permit area has the capability for several types of
land uses. Those lands close to the Purgatoire River can be used for
production of hay and small grains. Productivity is limited by the high
elevation and short growing season. Those lands which moderately slope
away from the river have potential for use as pastureland and occasional
hay production. This land use is consistent with the existing land use
of the area. Steep slopes into the adjacent hilly topography have been
2.04-1
