10.4 STRUCTURAL BACKFILL <br /> 10.4.1 Structural backfill is that material placed and compacted adjacent to <br /> structures. Unless otherwise specified, Zone 1 fill material shall be <br /> placed as structural backfill. <br /> 10.4.2 Structural backfill shall be placed in horizontal lifts and compacted <br /> to a minimum of ninety-eight percent (98%) Standard Proctor <br /> density in accordance with ASTM D 698. Backfill shall be placed <br /> to the height of the natural or new ground lines, whichever is lower. <br /> The lift thickness after compaction shall not exceed six inches (6"). <br /> 10.4.3 The in-place moisture content of the structural backfill shall be <br /> within minus two percent (—2%) and plus two percent (+2%) of <br /> the optimum. <br /> 10.4.4 The Contractor shall be responsible for any damage to structures <br /> caused by his or her operations in placing and compacting backfill <br /> adjacent to structures. Any damage to structures shall be repaired <br /> by and at the expense of the Contractor. <br /> 10.4.5 Compacted backfill shall not be placed around or behind the <br /> retaining walls until a minimum of fourteen (14) days has elapsed <br /> from the concrete placement. Heavy equipment shall not be <br /> permitted to operate closer than five feet (5') from structures for <br /> wall heights less than eight feet (8'), and not closer than two-thirds <br /> (2/3)the wall height for wall heights between eight feet(8')and ten <br /> feet (101. Heavy equipment shall not be operated over the outlet <br /> until a minimum of three feet (3') of compacted fill has been placed <br /> and compacted over the pipe. <br /> 10.4.6 The differential height of backfill behind opposite structure walls <br /> shall not exceed two feet (2') during backfill operation. <br /> 10.5 TYPE I FILTER <br /> 10.5.1 Type I Filter fill shall be placed in maximum six-inch (6") loose layers <br /> and compacted by two passes of vibratory equipment. <br /> 10.5.2 Prior to compaction, the materials shall be suitably moistened. <br /> SPEC.A- EARTHWORK <br /> PAGE 13 <br />
