c
reservoir must be operated at levels above the spillway concrete (i.e. stored
behind the steel spillway gate).
3. There is still a level of uncertainty in the seepage flow rate from Dam 1 that
can only be characterized after a few years of operation. Oversizing the
capacity until that determination can be made is prudent.
PIPELINE
The size of the pipeline was reduced from 20-inch diameter to 18-inch diameter as
a result of the reduced pumping requirements. This reduces the design capacity of the
pipeline to approximately 5,500 gpm and is governed by pipeline pressure constraints. If
the pipeline size is reduced further, then the flow velocity in the pipeline exceeds 10 feet
per second with two 629 pumps operating, which is not recommended at this installation.
Also, the added friction loss in a smaller pipeline may result in the need to install larger
motors on the 629 pumps, which would result in additional cost for the motors and
electrical system.
As requested at the meeting, an additional pipeline access vault was added to the
design. This vault would be located near the proposed pump station and would contain
an access tee with a blind flange. Drawing No. 1051.156-2 was revised to reflect the
revised pipe size and the addition of the vault.
PUMP STATION DESIGN
The preliminary design of the pump station was modified to include only two 629
pumps and space for possible future expansion to three pumps. As a result, the building
size was reduced from 24 x 36 feet to 22 x 30 feet. The modified general arrangement
of the pump station is shown on the revised Drawing No. 1051.158-1.
3
