Jim McArdle
October 30, 1980
Page 2
4. How much abandoned shaft and tunnel will there be upon
completion of mining? How much water can be expected
to accumulate in the abandoned tunnel system? What degree
of contamination will this water have and will it pose a
hazzard to surface water systems?
5. How much water will be lost to evaporation from the Glory
Hole? Will this loss be augmented?
6. Will the water in the Glory Holebe contaminated by heavy
metals? What is the relationship between pH and heavy
metals? What role will this have in the possible reclamation
of the Glory Hole as a fishery? Can reclamation programs
be initiated to create a fishery in the Glory Hole?
7. What is the time table for filling of the Glory Hole? What
will be its final size in surface acres?
8. Will ground water monitoring be conducted upon completion
of mining? Why - why not?
This appears to be an important issue in light of possible
surface water contamination from tailings.
9. Is there or will there be an impermeable barrier between the
Arkansas and Ten Mile drainages? Also, between the Glory
Hole, abandoned tunnels and Ten Mile Creek?
10. How many cfs water rights are owned by Climax? Elaborate
as to domestic, storage, etc.
11. Stream flows and drainage patterns are expected to change upon
completion of mining. Does Climax guarantee that minimum
stream flows will be met upon completion of mining?
12. How much water will percolate through the completed tailings?
What will the quality of that water be?
A better question might be - what will be the final water budgets
for Ten Mile Creek and the Arkansas River upon completion of
mining. (We recognize that this data will be in the form of
estimates and presented as maximums, minimums and yearly
averages. We request that this data be examined by the Division
of Water Resources. )
