Further, all of Section 15, 40 acres in the NENE of
Section 22, and 1.20 acres in the NNW and NWNE of Section 23, T3, R94W remain without an
initial file search and Class III inventory. These areas are outside the area proposed for mining
but if plans change a Class III inventory and follow -up consultations will be required. These
areas, as well as, the permit and proposed permit area(s) are shown on the Appendix 2 Map.
The most recent and expansive inventory "A Class III Cultural Resource Inventory for Colowyo
Coal Company's Collom Mine Project, Moffat and Rio Blanco Counties Colorado —
November2006" prepared by TRC Mariah Associates Inc. (Attachment 1) thoroughly covers the
Collom Expansion, as well as revisiting and updating evaluations of previously recorded sites for
the Colowyo Mine. The Mariah 2006 study fiully documents 73 new sites and 69 isolated finds
recorded during the most recent survey of the mine. Mariah also revisited 51 previously recorded
sites. The various attachments, that are included in this evaluation, are taken from the TRC
Mariah Report and a BLM Little Snake Field Office Leasing EA.
The attached map including an insert (Attachment 2) show the mine permit boundaries, the
proposed Collom Expansion area (project boundary), and newly and previously reported sites.
The - insert-map _better _depicts _the-Collom _ Expansion _area._
Attachment 3, from the Mariah 2006 report, presents a listing of previous projects /surveys
conducted for the area.
Attachment 4, presents a summary of previously recorded sites and their National Register
evaluations.
Attachment 5, presents a summary of the newly recorded sites, Mariah's National Register
recommendations, locational information, site age assessments, potential mining impacts,,and
potential additional work information.
Attachment 6 provides tabular information for all of the recorded sites including previous
National Register eligibility findings and Mariah's recommendations for newly found sites. The
attachment also includes general recommendations for additional or follow -up work at some
sites. Of the 124 recorded sites, five sites have been recommended as eligible for nomination to
the National Register while 14 sites remain unevaluated needing more information prior to an
eligibility recommendation being made. The .remainders of the sites are recommended as or have
been found not eligible for nomination to the National Register.
Attachment 7, specifically addresses management recommendations and follow -up requirements
for the eligible and unevaluated sites. Recent discussion with the company confirm that under the
proposed mining plan they will be able to avoid the 5 sites found or recommended as being
register eligible and the 14 sites needing further information.
In J
"N
U
