I.3 Soil Handling
Since the soils of the foothills and alluvial bottoms have developed from the same
geologic parent material, segregation of these soils in pre- mining salvaging and
stockpiling operations need not be considered. Also the volume of available salvageable
"topsoil" from the foothills will be very small relative to the volume of available valley
bottom soil.
The successful conservation of these soil resources for reclamation will depend on proper
resource management, especially limiting erosion. The following conservation methods
have been and will continue to be employed to reduce the exposure of bare soil. Soil was
immediately stockpiled and re- vegetated in the interest of short and long term stability
considering erosion constraints. Post - mining contours have been designed to reduce
slope length and, where possible, slope gradients. Techniques such as contour furrowing,
drilling on the contour, compaction and mulching will be utilized. It is anticipated that
the soil will be somewhat nitrogen and phosphate deficient at the time of reclamation.
Laboratory analysis of soil just prior to re- vegetation will be conducted.
