The Neville series is an Ustic Torriorthent, fine - loamy, mixed Calcareous), mesic. The
soils are deep, well drained, moderately permeable, and similar to the Paradox series
which has a coarse -loamy control section. A typical pedon description follows (colors
are for air dry soil unless otherwise noted):
A -- 0 to 4 inches; reddish brown (2.5YR 5/4) fine sandy loam, reddish brown
(2.5YR 4/4) moist; weak medium granular structure; slightly hard, very friable,
non sticky and non plastic; strong effervescence, moderately alkaline; clear wavy
boundary. (3 to 10 inches thick)
Al2 -- 4 to 16 inches; reddish brown (2.5YR 5/4) loamy fine sand (2.5YR 4/4)
moist; massive; soft, very friable, non sticky and non plastic; strong
effervescence, moderately alkaline; clear wavy boundary. (10 to 20 inches thick)
AC -- 16 to 48 inches; reddish brown (2.5YR 5/4) sandy clay loam, (2.5YR 4/4)
moist; weak medium sub angular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable,
slightly sticky and slightly plastic; strong effervescence, moderately alkaline;
clear wavy boundary. (15 to 30 inches thick)
C -- 48 to 60 inches; reddish brown (2.5YR 5/4) loamy fine sand (2.5YR 4/4)
moist; massive; slightly hard, very friable, non sticky and non plastic; strong
effervescence, moderately alkaline;
These soils are usually calcareous to the surface. The 10 to 40 inch control
section is sandy clay loam or loam.
The A horizon is usually fine sandy loam but may be sandy clay loam or loamy fine
sand. Rock fragments are typically 0 to 5 percent but range from 0 to 15 percent. These
are of fine gravel size and a few of cobble size may be in some pedons.
The A horizon is 2.5YR or 5YR hue, value of 5 or 6 dry, 4 moist, and chroma of 3 to 6.
The C horizon has hue of 2.5YR or 5YR. A small amount of visible calcium carbonate
may occur, but typically there is none visible.
The Paradox- Neville soils are used primarily for cattle and sheep grazing and for
irrigated cropland where water is available. There is no irrigated land in the vicinity of
the JD -7 site. However, some of the surrounding land at some time was seeded to
improve range forage grasses. These pastures were observed to be in very poor condition
from lack of management and were overgrown with annual wheatgrass. Four wing
saltbush and crested wheatgrass were also present. In spite of nearly level slopes, some
channels and gullies had been cut by running water.
The Neville- Paradox soils are an excellent potential resource for re- vegetative
reclamation.
I -3
