Prior to 1976 all development and production
of coal was done with mining sections consisting of a continuous
miner, loading machine and shuttle cars . In 1976 longwall mining
was introduced and production is now and will continue to be by
both longwall and continuous mining methods . Underground coal
haulage is by belt conveyors from the section dump points to the
surface.
Planned mine developments are shown on
Exhibit II-A-2. All development will be done with continuous
miners . If rock dikes are encountered they will be blasted with
explosives . Production panels will be mined with mechanized
longwall methods utilizing hydraulic powered shields for roof
support and a shearing machine for actual cutting of the coal .
Mid-Continent Resources and the Department of
4
Energy have entered into a contract to demonstrate the feasibility
of multilift mining in thick coal seams . The Dutch Creek (#l)
mine was selected as the site for this demonstration which will
require approximately eight to ten years to complete. Briefly, the
objective of the demonstration is to extract a second longwall
panel immediately below a previously mined panel. A successful
demonstration will substantially increase recoverable coal reserves
from thick coal seams .
(2) Dutch Creek No. 2 Mine.
Dutch Creek No. 2 Mine is essentially a drift
mine in the Dutch Creek seam and is located stratigraphically
approximately 450 ft. above the Dutch Creek No . 1 Mine and L. S .
