the mining operation because of unforseen or changing conditions
that would otherwise prevent the mines from meeting their shipment
requirements .
2 . Production methods and equipment
a . Specific type and method of mining procedures
The total coal production from Coal Basin is by
underground mining methods . The two basic mining methods utilized
are room and pillar and longwall . All of the five mines have
been classified as drift mines because the mines were opened on
or near the outcrop and then developed within the coal seams .
Because of the dip of the coal seams and the general topography
of the area, the cover above the coal seams increases very rapidly,
thereby limiting the amount of shallow or low cover coal to a
relatively narrow band along the outcrop. Virtually all of the
shallow cover reserves (up to 1, 000 ft. ) have been mined . In
terms of cover (overburden) the present coal producing faces are
among the deepest, if not the deepest, in the western hemisphere.
Production in Coal Basin is from two minable coal
seams which are the Dutch Creek Seam or Middle Bed and the Coal
Basin Seam or B Bed . Four of the five mines produce coal from
the B Bed or Coal Basin Seam. They are the Dutch Creek #1 Mine,
the L. S . Wood 03) Mine, Bear Creek (#4) Mine, and the Coal
Basin (#5) Mine. The single mine producing coal from the Middle
Bed or Dutch Creek Seam is the Dutch Creek #2 Mine.
b .
