(1) Introduction
Mining procedures and techniques employed
by Mid-Continent are selected in accordance with the following
criteria:
- Compliance with Federal, State and
local rules and regulations .
- Suitability for anticipated mining
conditions
- Achievement of maximum recovery of the
coal resource consistent with safety and cost
Maintenance of a consistent, uniform
quality product
- Operating in accordance with good
mining practice
- Consistent with the capabilities and
limitations of the available mining equipment .
The general mining sequence includes driving
main entry slopes with continuous mining machines and then
establishing either room and pillar sections or longwall faces
for production mining operations . Coal is conveyed from the
mining area or face to 1000 ton storage bins near the mine portals
by belt conveyors . Immediately prior to being placed in the
bins, the coal is sized in rotary breaker screens and trash and
coarse refuse material are removed and discarded . The coal is
then loaded on 30 ton capacity trucks, and hauled to the prepara-
tion plant. The coal is unloaded, processed through the wash
plant, dried to required specifications and stored in 1 , 000 ton
storage bins . The clean coal is then loaded into 30 ton haul
trucks from these storage bins and moved to the train loadout
