• Project Localities: schools, churches, synagogues, community-based organizations, <br /> day care and Head Start centers, and preschool programs. <br /> • Project Examples: teaching English and math literacy and other basic skills to <br /> parents of young children so they can help their children to learn; helping teen <br /> parents stay in school by providing needed services such as child care; working in <br /> schools with high concentrations of low-income students; mentoring,tutoring,and <br /> providing after-school and summer learning opportunities; coordinating service- <br /> learning activities for K-12 students. <br /> 3. PUBLIC SAFETY <br /> Crime Prevention and Control: Reducing the incidence of violence and improving <br /> criminal justice services, law enforcement, and victim services: <br /> • Project Localities: schools, community-based organizations,playgrounds; public <br /> transportation points, public gathering places, family courts,juvenile courts. <br /> • Project Examples: conducting community surveys or crime prevention surveys; <br /> making schools safe; creating safe havens; providing training in conflict resolution; <br /> involving youth in substance abuse prevention efforts and education; crime <br /> prevention management strategies targeted at key locations; enhancing community <br /> policing efforts; improving services available for victims of crime and strengthening <br /> innovative criminal justice programs such as neighborhood courts and community <br /> restitution; reducing specific crime problems such as drug dealing, domestic <br /> violence, crimes motivated by bias, crimes against senior citizens, and child abuse. <br /> 4. HUMAN NEEDS <br /> Health and Home: Providing independent living assistance, home and community- <br /> based healthcare, rebuilding neighborhoods; working with people who are homeless. <br /> • Project Localities: residences, group homes, schools, clinics, community-based <br /> organizations, shelters. <br /> • Project Examples: providing assistance and health care to the homebound elderly, <br /> people with disabilities, and people living with AIDS; enhancing preventative health <br /> services to low-income communities through community health clinics; working <br /> with people who are homeless by providing shelter support;renovating and <br /> rehabilitating low-income housing; helping individuals move from public assistance <br /> and into self-sufficiency by providing literacy tutoring and other services. <br /> National Disaster Relief: AmeriCorps*NCCC Corps Members and staff are part of the <br /> American Red Cross National Disaster Response Network. AmeriCorps*NCCC Corps <br /> Members are trained and certified by the U.S. Forest Service for forest fire fighting and <br /> are part of the national response network. AmeriCorps*NCCC Corps Members are <br /> certified for CPR and First Aid. They are trained as technicians in first responder mass <br /> care and damage assessment. <br /> • Project Localities and Examples: Communities effected by earthquakes, <br /> hurricanes, floods and fires. <br /> 12 <br />
