• Project Localities: schools, churches, synagogues, community-based organizations, day care and Head Start centers, and preschool programs. • Project Examples: teaching English and math literacy and other basic skills to parents of young children so they can help their children to learn; helping teen parents stay in school by providing needed services such as child care; working in schools with high concentrations of low-income students; mentoring,tutoring,and providing after-school and summer learning opportunities; coordinating service- learning activities for K-12 students. 3. PUBLIC SAFETY Crime Prevention and Control: Reducing the incidence of violence and improving criminal justice services, law enforcement, and victim services: • Project Localities: schools, community-based organizations,playgrounds; public transportation points, public gathering places, family courts,juvenile courts. • Project Examples: conducting community surveys or crime prevention surveys; making schools safe; creating safe havens; providing training in conflict resolution; involving youth in substance abuse prevention efforts and education; crime prevention management strategies targeted at key locations; enhancing community policing efforts; improving services available for victims of crime and strengthening innovative criminal justice programs such as neighborhood courts and community restitution; reducing specific crime problems such as drug dealing, domestic violence, crimes motivated by bias, crimes against senior citizens, and child abuse. 4. HUMAN NEEDS Health and Home: Providing independent living assistance, home and community- based healthcare, rebuilding neighborhoods; working with people who are homeless. • Project Localities: residences, group homes, schools, clinics, community-based organizations, shelters. • Project Examples: providing assistance and health care to the homebound elderly, people with disabilities, and people living with AIDS; enhancing preventative health services to low-income communities through community health clinics; working with people who are homeless by providing shelter support;renovating and rehabilitating low-income housing; helping individuals move from public assistance and into self-sufficiency by providing literacy tutoring and other services. National Disaster Relief: AmeriCorps*NCCC Corps Members and staff are part of the American Red Cross National Disaster Response Network. AmeriCorps*NCCC Corps Members are trained and certified by the U.S. Forest Service for forest fire fighting and are part of the national response network. AmeriCorps*NCCC Corps Members are certified for CPR and First Aid. They are trained as technicians in first responder mass care and damage assessment. • Project Localities and Examples: Communities effected by earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and fires. 12
