APPENDIX: C <br /> AMERI ORPS*NCCC OBJECTIVES <br /> To provide human and logistical resources for urban, suburban,rural and <br /> underdeveloped areas in the following priority categories: <br /> 1. ENVIRONMENT <br /> The Natural & CuI Enviroumenti : Utilizing appropriate technologies,tools and <br /> best practices for restoring,conserving and enhancing a community's natural and cultural <br /> resources. <br /> • Project Localities: public lands,forests,prairie, deserts,rivers, streams,lakes, <br /> coastlines,agricultural/grazing lands and soils. This includes improving public <br /> safety and public health through projects in the open spaces,waters and parks of <br /> urban and suburban areas. <br /> • Project Examples: fisheries habitat restoration; agricultural soils conservation; <br /> restoration of water resources quality and quantity; park facility improvements; <br /> natural and cultural resource inventories; inventory and habitat enhancement for <br /> endemic-and endangered species and their habitats; native plant conservation and <br /> restoration; urban forestry inventory and enhancement;urban stream restoration; <br /> regional park analysis,design and plan implementation;handicap accessibility to <br /> trail and nature interpretive sites;trail/boardwalk construction; forest fire fighting <br /> and prescribed burning; stream bank and riparian zone restoration;windbreak <br /> construction;wetlands and marsh restoration. <br /> The Built Environment: Reducing community environmental hazards and conserving, <br /> preserving and restoring seven community ecological fundamentals: energy, air,water, <br /> food, housing,transportation, and waste disposal. Projects that provide community- <br /> based solutions to global environmental/cultural problems are encouraged. <br /> • Project Localities: residences,historic districts, community structures,reservoirs, <br /> urban/suburban gardens and lawns,transportation corridors,landfills. <br /> • Project Examples: water quality testing and non-point source pollution reduction; <br /> solid waste reduction; neighborhood beautification; urban lots to gardens, parks and <br /> forest nurseries; urban watershed surveys; conservation of historic buildings and <br /> sites; environmental hazards survey;natural disaster assessment and recovery work; <br /> rails to trails; bike path design and construction, structure energy audits and <br /> installation of water and energy conserving devices; community-based <br /> environmental education; community-based environmental education on integrated <br /> pest management; recycling; cleanups. <br /> 2. EDUCATION <br /> School Readiness and School Success: Furthering early childhood development by <br /> improving the quality and availability of child development programs in both formal and <br /> informal educational programs.
