APPENDIX: D <br /> AMERICORPS*NCCC PROJECT ACCOMPLISHMENT SAMPLES <br /> (1994-95) <br /> Environment <br /> • Inspected and surveyed 200 buildings, 15 miles of trails,and 32 parking lots,assessing <br /> California State Parks A.D.A. accessibility standards compliance.Inspection of Park <br /> facilities by CMs resulted in Park management assessment of needed improvements. <br /> • Built two 25 ft. long stone check dams, contoured creek flood plane,cleaned one culvert, <br /> rebuilt headwall,reinstalled marker cement slab, landscaped area around marker and <br /> installed natural rock border. <br /> • Opened 4 miles of upstream spawning habitat on the Western Branch, 2.3 miles of upstream <br /> on the Dorsey Run, for DNR-Tidewater and Fisheries. <br /> Education <br /> • Created 10 volunteer packets of instructional aids, each with three levels of exercises and <br /> flashcards for use in the Community-Based Tutoring Program;packets allow future <br /> volunteers to immediately know what to expect and enables teachers to organize and direct <br /> volunteers more effectively; it also allows teachers more interpersonal time with students. <br /> • Informed,coached and mentored over 160 students at the junior-high level. <br /> • Began the Homework Club after one month of preparation where teachers identified the <br /> students who needed help.Policy and procedures of the HW club were developed by the <br /> CMs.Up to 40 students attended HW club and benefited from the extra help. <br /> • Called 100 teens to sing at the MLK celebration. Planned skits in order to promote clubs in <br /> the school. Marched in Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. <br /> Human Needs <br /> • Disaster relief. staffed two mass care shelters;provided 5644 hours of service; served 2,400 <br /> families; staffed two Red Cross warehouses; served 6,170 meals; assisted case workers <br /> (including Spanish translation skills)opening 2,230 cases, distributed food, medical supplies <br /> and other emergency materials. <br /> • Prepared one house to be refurbished; refurbished a second house for Cole Coalition, for an <br /> increase in property value of$36,000. The tax base has been increased. Building codes have <br /> been met throughout the process. <br /> • Increased production by 30% for Women's Bean Project, a program fostering self- <br /> sufficiency for low-income women; established positive role model relationships between <br /> Corps Members and participants. <br /> Public Safety <br /> • Updated offender files information into name/file computer system of El Cajon Police <br /> Department. <br /> • Distributed conflict resolution packets; Attended Neighbor-to-Neighbor meetings to become <br /> acquainted and work with landlords and tenants. <br /> • Acted as"Marshals"to assist local police departments with crowd control during marches/ <br /> parades to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. <br /> 13 <br />
