outlined for groundwater in Table 1 of the CDRMS Guidelines for the Collection of
Baseline Water Quality and Overburden Geochemistry Data.
Aquifer tests will be performed on all eight existing and the five new bedrock monitoring
wells define aquifer characteristics of the Wadge Coal, underburden and overburden.
Due to the depths of the wells and water levels anticipated, slug tests will be performed
for collecting aquifer characteristics. Well yields will be determined using bailers or
other suitable method in conjunction with collecting water samples in each well during
the baseline collection period.
Ongoing monitoring data collected by SCC at alluvial well SCAL46 will be used to
provide baseline groundwater information for the proposed portal area. This well is
downstream of Seneca's Pond 004, and is currently monitored for water levels, field
parameters and groundwater quality parameters bi- annually (May /June and
September /October). Details on the existing monitoring requirements for this well can be
found in SCC's 2007 Annual Hydrology Data Report for the Seneca II Mine, submitted
in May 2008. Data collected from this well is extensive, spans several decades, and
should be sufficient for providing baseline groundwater information for the alluvium
down - gradient of the proposed portal area.
Surface Water Baseline Data
• Flow measurements, field water quality parameters and water samples collected at
Seneca's surface water site at the outfall of Pond 004 downstream of the proposed portal
will be used to provide baseline surface water information for the proposed portal area.
Pond 004 is currently monitored monthly for flow, field parameters, and NPDES water
quality parameters, and quarterly for an expanded list of surface water parameters.
Details on the existing monitoring requirements for this surface water site can be found in
SCC's 2007 Annual Hydrology Data Report for the Seneca II Mine, submitted in May
2008. Data collected from this site is extensive, spans several decades, and should be
sufficient for providing baseline surface water information, including continuous flow
data during earlier years, for evaluating baseline surface water down - gradient of the
proposed portal area,.
Several surface water sites have been established and monitored by SCC for more than
ten years on Grassy Creek and Little Grassy Creek. Currently, there are three sites being
monitored tri- annually for flow, field parameters, and a full suite of surface water
parameters: SSLGS on Little Grassy Creek up- gradient of mining activities at the Seneca
II Mine; SSG1 on upper Grassy Creek but below Pond 011 at Seneca's Yoast Mine; and
YSGS on lower Grassy Creek well below both SCC's Yoast Mine and the Seneca II
Mine. Details on the existing monitoring requirements for these surface water sites can
be found in SCC's 2007 Annual Hydrology Data Reports for the Seneca II Mine and
Yoast Mine submitted in May 2008. In addition, site YSGF5 was operated on upper
Grassy Creek prior to the onset of mining at SCC's Yoast Mine. Data collected at this
site included continuous flow data and monthly field parameters and full suite surface
• water quality data from March through October for several years.
