• groundwater data. Two of the four existing wells completed in the Wadge Coal, and two
of the four existing wells completed in the Wadge overburden will be selected for
collecting baseline data from both formations. However, because the wells have been in
place for more than twenty years, more information is needed from each well to
determine if the wells remain properly sealed and will provide adequate water level and
quality data for baseline purposes.
No new alluvial wells are proposed at this time. An existing Seneca Coal Company
(SCC) alluvial well at the Seneca H Mine located below the portal location to be finalized
prior to the onset of baseline monitoring activities will be utilized for collecting baseline
alluvial groundwater data (e.g., SCAL46 located below the southern proposed portal
location).
Surface Water Site Installations
No new surface water monitoring site installations are proposed for baseline monitoring
purposes. Existing SCC surface water site established downstream of the proposed portal
location will be utilized for collecting baseline surface water data.
Groundwater Baseline Data
It is anticipated the WUB wells at exploration holes ccu013 and ccu014 will be
• completed by mid -July, and the WUB, WC, and WOV wells at exploration hole ccu025
may not be completed until late September 2008. Water levels will be collected monthly
in each new WOV, WUB and WC monitoring well after completion, weather permitting
during the winter and spring depending on access. Water quality samples will be
collected from each new WOV, WUB and WC monitoring well soon after completion,
and attempts will be made to collect quarterly water samples from the wells through
2009, weather permitting.
Beginning in June 2008 through August 2008, water levels will be collected monthly
from all eight existing monitoring wells, and water samples will be collected from all
eight existing wells in June and August 2008. This data will be evaluated as soon as
available to select two of the four existing WC wells and two of the four existing WOV
wells for collecting baseline data. At a minimum, monthly water levels and quarterly
water samples will be collected from two existing WC and two existing WOV wells
through 2009, weather permitting.
Water quality sampling will be targeted soon after completing each new monitoring well,
or during the months of June, August, and October for the existing monitoring wells.
Attempts will be made to collect water quality samples from the new and existing
monitoring wells during the first quarter 2009, weather permitting. Field water quality
parameters (pH, EC, and temperature) will be collected concurrently, and samples will be
analyzed using ACZ Laboratories in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Samples collected for
baseline purposes in new and existing monitoring wells will be analyzed for the attached
• Ground Water Quality Parameter List, which includes the suggested suite of parameters
2
