INSPECTION REPORT - PAGE 3
FILE NO. M -77 -378
DATE: August 28, 1985
Terry Tunnel
5. The Terry Tunnel site was inspected. Mine water discharge was being
routed to the sludge ponds. Mine discharge was approximately 100 gpm.
Water quality is as follows:
SS No. 3 = Terry Tunnel discharge at portal
pH = 6.9
EC = 623
T = 51.9
(Flow at pond outlet flume = 0.3')
6. Mine water treatment sludge disposal at this site has not been
appropriately handled. Unlined trenches have been excavated for sludge
disposal from the ponds. This method of sludge disposal is not
addressed in the permit. In discussion with Mr. Murray, it appears that
this sludge may not be as toxic or acid forming as sludge from the
American Tunnel. It was discussed that the amount of of sludge should
be estimated over a reasonable period of time so that a feasible sludge
disposal and reclamation plan could be designed and implemented.
See Recommendation No. 2.
Millsite /Tailings Area
7. The area where the Amerian Tunnel Mine water treatment sludge had been
disposed along the Animas River was inspected. The meander above this
site has approximately 1.5 feet of berm above the top of the channel
bank. This berm is not adequate to contain flow in the channel. During
high water it is likely that this berm would be washed out and flow
possibly routed through the sludge disposal area.
8. The sludge disposal berm adjacent and just north of the Animas River
channel appears to be stable. Additional armoring of this berm may be
needed as erosion has occurred on the Animas River side.
9. The sludge disposal area is not lined with a geo- membrane liner. A
filter fabric was used. The base of the pond is old tailings as stated
by Mr. Murray.
