INSPECTION REPORT - PAGE 4
FILE NO. M -77 -378
DATE: August 28, 1985
10. Water samples in this area were taken as follows:
SS No. 4 = Seep at base of berm below sludge disposal pond
pH = 6.3
EC = 1218
T = 60.4
SS No. 5 = Animas River
pH = 7.04
EC = 244
T = 58.2
.
11. The tailings pond area was inspected. Discharge from spring flow was
not being adequately diverted. Drainage control to divert runoff and
snow melt is needed above the active tailings ponds. Standing water was
observed in the tailings pond. Mr. Murray stated that this water is
predominantly mill water. Water quality is as follows:
pH = 7.4
EC = 564
T = 64.1
American Tunnel Site
12. The dump was inspected. Much mine refuse and some trash is in this dump
(approximately 60 to 80 percent). Total yardage is estimated at
approximtely 8,000 yd
13. There is no drainage control plan for this site. Mine discharge water
was not being treated, but was being routed through the ponds.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. The Lake Emma Site should be incorporated into the mining and reclamtion
plan by submitting a permit amendment. This plan should address
drainage control during operation and final reclamation and
reconstruction of the drainage. This should be submitted to the
Division prior to October 11, 1985.
2. A sludge disposal plan for the Terry Tunnel site should be incorporated
into a permit amendment. This should be submitted prior to
October 11, 1985.
