The purpose of this inspection was to follow -up on possible violations
which the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board found reason to believe
exist on this site. Mr. Murray accompanied the inspectors during this
inspection.
Lake Emma Site
2. The Lake Emma Site was inspected. The lake has been drained as a result
of undermining which caused a collapse of the lake bottom into the mine
stapes. The old lake shore line encompasses approximately
'-seven (7) acres. The collapsed lake bottom is a hole approximately
one -third of an acre. This site is not incorporated in the existing
permit.
3. A surface water diversion is constructed on the north and east side of
the lake to divert surface water runoff and snow melt. Some maintenance
of this structure is needed along the berm where erosion has occurred.
The diversion appears to be adequately sized but may also be seeping.
Ther is no existing drainage control or diversion on the west and
northwest slopes above the collapsed lake. See Recommendation No. 1
4. Surface water and seepage from the surface water diversion (and possibly
colluvial groundwater discharge) was entering the collapsed lake
bottom. Flow into the collapse area /mine stope was approximately
80 gpm. Water quality was as follows:
SS No. 1 = Surface water in diversion above collapse area.
pH = 7.38
EC = 105 mhos /cm
T = 50.4
SS No. 2 = Water entering collapse area /mine stope
pH = 6.9
EC = 214 mhos /cm
T = 51.4
To trace possible seepwater and flow through mine sulforhodamine dye was
used. However, after waiting over one (1) hour at the Lake Emma site
tinted (dyed) outflow seep water was not observed. Mr. Murray stated
that he would check this site the next day.
