time . The sludge removed was deposited in "Failings Pond No. 3
until ice build-up reduced the pond freeboard to the point where
additional sludge could not be added. Tailings Pond No. 4 was
then used for deposition during the remainder of the cleaning
process. No adverse effects on water duality were noticed as a
result , and a comparative analysis (DPTA extract) of Tailings
Pond No. 4 slimes and AT sludge was done (see Appendix ) for
metals and ABP. Metal analysis was similar to the tailings
slimes and the ABP was positive , which should actually buffer the
ABP of the tailings .
The rock dump for waste material (:mentioned in the 1987 Annual
Report) was not completed , as not enough waste material will be
removed from the mine in the near future to justify its expense .
Activities planned for 1989 are:
(1 ) to continue Pond cleaning on an as-needed basis to maintain
solid settling capacity;
(2) to do site clean-up work;
(3) to install a settling pond piping system that will allow
pond cleaning without disrupting water quality and to reduce
turbulence at the pond inlets;
(4) to install a seepage catchment line to better monitor the
effect of the waste dump on water duality.
Terry Tunnel Area - Plate No. 2
All trash accumulated at the site was cleaned up and removed from
the site.
The 2 , 000-gallon diesel tank mentioned in the last annual report
was removed from the site as it was no longer needed because a
pumping system was installed underground to service the upper
levels .
The No. 1 settling pond was thoroughly excavated with an
excavator and an impermeable layer was placed and compacted to
stop pond seepage . The sludge excavated was hauled by dump truck
to Tailings Pond No. 3 . Settling Pond No. 2 was partially
cleaned with the mudcat and 80-barrel tankers . The No. 2 pond
was not thoroughly cleaned because the weather was too cold to
compact an impermeable layer and the pond would lea}: if cleaned
completely. The sludge previously deposited in pits at the site
was excavated with an excavator and hauled with dump trucks to
Tailings Pond No. 3 . This was done in agreement with the MLRD
that disposal at the site was not covered under the Permit.
The weir for measuring discharge volume was reset to accurately
measure flow at the site.
- 2 -
