Page 3
Site: Inactive Tail Pond No. 3
Reference map: Mill, Tailings Pond and Office
Elevation: 9,416 ft to 9,470 ft Jjt' i'`a ji
Ecosystem: Intermountain, Aspen
Aspect: Southeast
Affected Acreage: 9.5 acres
Disturbance Type: Major
Comments: Acreage affected at this site is listed as having major dis-
turbance resulting from mill tailings deposition practices conducted by
Standard Metals Corporation. This tailings disposal site is differ-
entiated from other tailings sites in that the impoundment embankment was
constructed from native soils adjacent to the site as opposed to segregated
tailings material. Disturbance at the site is therefore comprised of barrow
areas as well as the displacement of native soils by tailings. As of this
time the Town of Silverton has leased this site for use as a municipal
dump, which is no longer active. At the present time Standard Metals
Corporation is not responsible for this site.
Site: Inactive Tail Pond No. 2
Reference map: Mill, Tailings Pond and Office
Elevation: 9,500 ft to 9,700 ft
Ecosystem: Intermountain, Aspen
Aspect: Southeast
Affected Acreage: 21.6 acres
Disturbance Type: Major
Comments: Acreages affected at this site are listed as having major dis-
turbance resulting from mill tailing deposition practices. The majority
of the disturbance occurred prior to Standard Metals Corporation activity
in the area and includes displacement of native topsoil and subsoils with
mill tailings, producing an area inhibitory to plant establishment, and
growth.
Information Response
1. Zero acres affected during 1984.
2. Zero acres reclaimed during 1984.
3. Approximately 11.48 acres in various stages of revegetation and
another 5 acres in various stages of grading.
4. The vegetation planted is predominantly mix C and mix D with various
other species being introduced by the S.C.S. Planting started on
this pond in 1976 and has continued through last summer.
5. All revegetated areas received approximately 300 lbs of 20-0-0
fertilizer per acre in 1984.
6. The appraisal of reclamation efforts on the slopes of the tailings
pond may be considered good. The appraisal of reclamation efforts
on the top of the pond may be considered fair to poor. The
suspected causes for the poor appraisal of the top of the ponds
may be acidic soil conditions, toxic soil conditions, infertile
soil conditions and extreme environmental weather conditions.
7. Zero acres to be affected in the coming year.
