August 1999 Monthly Report
Page 2
Sunnyside submitted completion certifications in October, 1997.
Included with this report are monitoring results from the Gold Prince and
Longfellow/Koehler projects for August monitoring samples.
• Sunnyside Mine Pool Mitigation—Alkaline Solution Injection
This project was not active in August of 1999 although 0.199 Mgallons of stormwater
were pumped through the Terry Tunnel bulkhead to lower the water level in the Terry
Tunnel settling ponds in order to maintain a no discharge status. This was necessary due
to inflows from a continuous storm pattern in August with little evaporation occurring.
Evaporation and infiltration are normally enough for pond level control.
The water pool pH, at the American Tunnel bulkhead, was 4.85 and the bulkhead gage
read 409 psi at the end of August. This would indicate that a rise in the mine pool
occurred since the end of July (46 feet). Sunnyside will continue to monitor these
parameters.
"B List" Projects
• Columbus Mine Portals—Mine Waste Dumps
• London Mine Portals —Waste Dumps
Work, permitting or arrangement for access are not planned until it becomes evident that
the work plans for these projects require implementation.
• Mayflower Facility— Upland Hydrological Control
During August, the Drainage A interception and diversion portion of this project was
completed and fully operational . Because of the continual precipitation that occurred,
the intercepted water is significantly more than was anticipated for this time of year.
The lined ditch being constructed to carry the intercepted flows from drainages A and B
was extended and nearing completion by month-end. Due to the weather and difficulties
with isolation of the flows in these drainages, this project is taking significantly longer
than anticipated. It appears that with luck it will be completed in September. The flows
intercepted to-date are larger than anticipated but this is probably a result of the weather
conditions.
