June 28, 2012 C- 1981 -038 /Bowie No. 1 Mine SB1
measured at 18 degrees (3.IH:1V)Ditch -1 is in good condition and effectively carries runoff
downslope. No erosional problems were noted in the ditch.
Run -off from the far west end in Zone 3 -A is controlled by a silt fence. Little evidence of
run -off was observed, but the silt fence is in need of maintenance. Mr. Bear contacted some
student workers during the inspection to come repair the silt fence. The repairs will be checked
in a follow -up inspection.
Zone 4 -D (Rock cut above portal /office level and below fan level) consists of four
benches topped by a native sandstone outcrop. The benches are stable and vegetated. The
sandstone outcrop blends in very well with surrounding outcrops in adjacent undisturbed areas.
Zone 1 -C (Fan level). This zone is south of the access road and appears to extend to the
access road below, although only approximately half of the area is shown on figure I of the bond
release application. One slope measurement was taken that showed an average slope of 22
degrees (2.5H:1V). This zone blends in well with adjacent areas. The area below (south) and
east of zone 1 -C was not included in the bond release application, although it has been graded
and it should be included as part of the bond release application. Some native shrubs have been
retained in this area. Ditch 2 that runs around the eastern and southern perimeter of this area is
stable.
Zone 4 -C and 2 -B. (Portal level Bench and Rock cut above). This zone is not as well
vegetated as some of the other zones. The surface has been heavily pock - marked with a backhoe
bucket creating many small depressions that serve to reduce runoff from this zone. An average
slope of 23 degrees (2.4H: IV) was measured. Little or no erosion was observed. A Delta -
Montrose Electric Association (DMEA) electric box is located in the lower part of zone 4 -C.
Mr. Bear explained that it is a `live' box that carries electricity to the residents in Stevens Gulch.
Zone 4 -B (or eastern end of Zone 1 -B) (Crushing and screening level). This zone lies
above a native sandstone outcrop. The zone blends in very well with the surrounding terrain. No
erosion was observed. There are several large patches of Canada thistle and musk thistle in this
zone that need to be treated.
Zone 2 -A (Road fill above warehouse bench). This zone has many native rock scattered
throughout. This zone is not as steep as other mine areas averaging a 14 degree (4.OH: IV) slope.
One problem noted in this zone is the prevalence of cheat grass - there is little perennial
vegetation or native grasses. The cheatgrass should be treated in the fall with a pre - emergent
chemical. The Delta County weed manager can suggest the best chemical to use.
Zone 1 -B (Shop and Warehouse level fill). This is a gently sloping hillside that is stable
and well vegetated.
Zone 1 -A (Crushing and screening level fill). This zone is well vegetated with native
grasses, shrub and forbs. The zone is well vegetated with little or no erosion observed on the
hillslopes. Ditch 7 is a riprapped channel with good vegetative growth. It runs straight down the
zone slightly east of the mid -zone, with an average gradient of 21 degrees (2.6H: IV). Erosion
had been observed in the lower end of ditch 7 on previous inspections. BRLLC has repaired the
lower channel by installing new rip rap and straw matting. The rip rap size looks larger than the
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 8
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 4
Page 3 of 9
