May 1997 Monthly Report
Page 2
- Columbus Mine Portals - Mine Waste Dumps
This is a "B List" project. Therefore, no work, permitting or
arrangement for access is planned until it becomes evident
that the work plan for this project requires implementation.
- Surface Mill Tailings at Eureka
No work was done on this project in May. Sunnyside, during
site inspections, has found some minor site grading and
erosion protection to be done prior to site neutralization.
Site access due to high water in the Animas and South Fork of
the Animas will delay completion of this work until late June
or July.
- Gold Prince - Mill Tailings
No work was done on this project in May. This site was still
inaccessible due to snow-cover at the end of May.
Implementation of the amended work plan is planned for the
1997 construction season and will begin with completion of the
portal bulkhead. Mobilization for this project will most
likely occur in July.
- Ransom Tunnel
By month end, water had been captured by a coffer dam and pipe
system to allow bulkhead form construction and bulkhead form
construction was in progress according to the submitted
design.
The bulkhead will be poured in June.
Longfellow - Koehler Mine Waste Project
During the month of May, no on-site remediation work was done
and snow still covered much of the site. Samples were taken
on May 15, 1997 . Flow from the Koehler portal had increased
to 97 GPM and zinc concentrations had dropped from a 250 mg/1
range to 28 mg/l. This may indicate a surface inflow that has
not been found. Site down-gradient flows (LKDG-1) on May 15,
1997 were comparable to May 23, 1996 flows and metal
concentrations appear to be lower. Temporary diversions,
Koehler dump removal and lake sediment removal may have
reduced metal loadings and concentrations. Sample results are
attached.
Planned activity for June at this site consists of additional
site monitoring.
